"The Mouse on 57th Street" Commentary

Here's a 1961 Chuck Jones cartoon that gets zero notice or appreciation. It should.

I haven't seen that cartoon in years! It's so refreshing to revisit it again after all this time. And I definately agree, it's these type of cartoons that deserve more respect than Bugs Bunny or Daffy Duck combined.

The two officers actually pre-date by a couple of months the dumb cop/smart cop set-up for "Car 54 Where Are You?", which debuted on NBC in the fall of 1961. The only difference was the smart cop on the show (played by Fred Gwynn) was named Muldoon, instead of the dumb one (Toody, played by Joe E. Ross).

"The Mouse on 57th Street" was also the last Warner Bros. cartoon written by Michael Maltese. Since it came out almost two years after Mike had jumped to Hanna-Barbera, the story may have been sitting on the shelf for a while, and was pulled out when Chuck needed something quick to do while most of the staff was focusing on "The Bugs Bunny Show".
